🌿 Types of Hedges We Work With

We work with all common hedge species found in East London gardens. Privet is the most popular — fast-growing, dense, and easy to shape. Leylandii grows quickly and provides excellent screening, but needs cutting at least twice a year to stop it getting out of control. Laurel has large glossy leaves and makes a bold, evergreen boundary. Beech and hornbeam are deciduous but hold their copper-coloured leaves through winter, giving year-round cover.

The main hedge cutting season runs from late spring through to early autumn. Most hedges benefit from at least one cut in late spring or early summer (after the main nesting season) and a second cut in late summer or early autumn to tidy them up before winter. Fast-growing species like privet and leylandii may need a third cut in midsummer.

It's important to check for nesting birds before cutting. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it's illegal to intentionally disturb nesting birds. The main nesting season runs roughly from March to August, though some birds nest earlier or later. We always check before starting and will postpone work if we find active nests — it's the law, and it's the right thing to do.
